Admission Procedure and Tips

It is recommended that prospective students get acquainted with the general research areas and interests in our Department. Individual home pages of faculty members can also be found here.

Your complete application package should be submitted to Graduate Admissions and Records. Please include a one-page statement with your application detailing your area(s) of interest and your general career goals.

NOTE: Applicants whose first language is not English, and who have resided in Canada or other English speaking countries for less than three consecutive years, immediately prior to the beginning of the session applied for, must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); the minimum acceptable score is 575 paper test and 231 computer-based test.

NOTE: The submission of GRE scores is strongly recommended. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will look favourably at applications showing GRE scores in the range of 2100 or above.

Once Admissions and Records have verified that your application can be considered, in principle, for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, your file will be forwarded to our Department.

At this point, the Department will advertise your file to potential academic supervisors (usually professors in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) to guide you through the program. If a supervisor cannot be found, the file will be sent back to Admissions and Records, and you will be notified, in writing, of the decision.

Our Department has a policy, which requires graduate students to be financially supported by the supervisor's and/or co-supervisor's research grants. Exceptions to this policy can only be made if the student has a major scholarship or has his/her own funding for financial support during the course of the graduate program. Therefore, it is recommended that applicants include with their application a statement regarding the need for financial support. An overview of current fees and other expenses is available at here. Please also visit the web page on Awards for Graduate Studies to find out if you are eligibile and can apply for additional scholarships.

Once an academic supervisor has been found, you will receive a recommendation from the Chair of this Department. You must respond to this offer within one month. In the event that more than one professor is interested in supervising a student, the graduate advisor will act as supervisor pro tem, and the applicant, upon arrival at the University of Victoria, will meet with the individual professors. Subsequently, the student will select a supervisor and inform the graduate advisor or the graduate secretary about his/her decision.
