Dale Shpak Research Profile
Research Interests
Dr. Shpak's academic research interests are in the design and implementation of communications and digital signal processing systems, software systems for engineering, and sensor networks.
This includes audio and
speech signal processing, the development of optimization and transformation
methods for 1-D and 2-D digital filters and linear arrays, TCP/IP and SONET networks,
simulation and code generation, real-time operating systems,
DSP and VLSI implementation for audio and communication systems, and topics in array signal processing.
He and his students have researched:
- Low-power wireless sensor networks, including electronic design and multi-channel communications..
- Closed-form, Remez, quasi-Newton, least-pth, weighted-least-squares, second-order cone programming, and transformation methods for the design of 1-D and 2-D digital filters and delay equalizers.
- Hyperspectral image processing for the remote detection of explosives using passive IR signals.
- Voice analysis, transformation, and pitch-shifting.
- Vocal pitch detection and classification.
- Audio signal processing.
- Real and complex Remez methods for linear array design.
- Adaptive filtering for HDSL and xDSL wire-line and CDMA wireless systems.
- Multiple antenna systems for CDMA.
- Design and implementation of area-efficient multiply-accumulators and other arithmetic units.
- IP networks and Quality of Service.
- ATM network protocols and switches.
- Hardare design of a wavelet-based image coder.
- Java applications for distributed communications and concurrent processing..
Professional Experience
- Consultant in DSP algorithms, technical software development (including C, C++, MATLAB, Java), simulation and code generation, hyperspectral image processing, audio signal processing, circuit design, and signal processing for non-destructive evaluation. 1984-
