Programming

Most ATMEL AVR series microcontrollers have In-System Programming (ISP) ability that uses the SPI port on the microcontroller. An inexpensive dongle was built that connects to the parallel port of the PC. This handy item's most expensive parts were the Male-Male DB-25 cable and the 74HC244 buffer. Click the thumbnail for a closer view of the finished dongle.

The ATMEL AVR ISP v2.65 software was free off of their website and worked well. Furthermore,  AVR Studio 3.5 was used to write, simulate and debug the assembly language. Refer to the ATMEL AVR Software link.
