Mechanical Design

The better part of the design work for the platform has been completed, and assembly has slowly begun. Figure 2 shows one of the two assembled octagonal halves of the chassis. Please refer to Appendix A for related mechanical drawings. Both team members will work on completing the required mechanical tasks.
The chassis is assembled from 3/8" $ 1{1 \over 2}'' \times 1{1 \over
2}''$ aluminum L extrusions. This creates an extremely ridged base to mount the drive train and related components to without needing to worry about possible damage to the platform in the case of an accident during development.

The following is a list of mechanical tasks that require completion: The main outstanding issue with the mechanical design is gaining access to a machine shop to complete fabrication of required parts. Unfortunately the mechanical engineering department shops are unavailable for use, an attempt is being made to gain access to the machine shops in the physics department.
