This website is of an ELEC 499B student project at the University of Victoria. 


The group's mandate is to design and implement a Zero Voltage Transition (ZVT) Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) DC/DC Boost Converter for use with a fuel cell application.  The converter has the following ideal specifications:

  • Input Voltage Range: 18-30VDC

  • Output Voltage: 48VDC

  • Output Power: 250W

  • Switching Frequency: 200kHz

Advances in soft switching converters have set new benchmarks in performance and cost in power converter technology, and have shown promise in overcoming the limitations of conventional hard switching technology.  High-frequency converters powered from high source voltage show significant improvements when operated with soft switching. These improvements include:

  • Reduced switching and energy losses during turn-on and turn-off which allow high switching frequency and size reduction of reactive components

  • Reduced EMI/RFI noise

  • No need for complex and expensive snubbers
