Electricity transmitted in power lines consists of both voltage and current; when there is a heavy load that adversely affects the voltage level or current phase angle, voltage sags, and power quality issues may occur, leading to equipment failure.

This project involves the design of a static VAR compensator (SVC) to minimize the effects of these voltage fluctuations and to maintain a stable, unity power factor during transient events, like motor starting. The compensator is sensitive to the fluctuations in voltage, current and phase angle and when they exceed an acceptable tolerance range, compensation occurs in the form of capacitive or inductive elements. The SVC will be installed at the customers load or equipment to compensate for power factor issues caused by transient events created by this equipment.
