Cognitive EEG or Cognitive Functional EEG Methods Reveal "How" Our Brains Work Under Task
What are Cognitive Functional EEG Methods?
Cognitive Functional EEG Methods or CF-EEG methods are a class of methods that show us "how" our brains are functioning on the anatomically macroscopic scale. For example, we might want to know how a specific area of our right-frontal lobe interacts with visual processing in our right-hemisphere occipital lobe. Hence, you can imagine that the result that this class of methods provide indicate characteristics of the functional relationship between these areas of the brain and how these characteristics relate to parameters of the task. The relationships between areas of the brain and relationships between the activity of specific areas of the brain and parameters of the task are quantified and can be used in a variety of comparisons using hypothesis testing. This differs from a class of analysis methods known as Quantitative EEG analysis or QEEG that uses the characteristics of scalp-waveform activities to generate numbers to relate to task parameters and make comparisons between conditions. Simply, QEEG describes the EEG phenomonology and is generally applied in "eyes-closed" or "eyes-open" tasks (non-cognitive). In contrast, CF-EEG utilizes the EEG to discern the activities of specific areas of the brain and the relationships between these brain areas and facilitates analysis of brain function while participants are involoved in cognitive tasks such as playing a videogame or solving a puzzle.
