Within Dr. Gordon's group, researchers receive training in
nanofabrication (FIB, ebeam, self-assembly methods),
optics and spectroscopy (ultra-fast, Raman etc.),
microfabrication (with collaborators in microfluidics) and advanced
theoretical methods in photonics and
plasmonics. Dr. Gordon's lab is well equipped with laser
and spectroscopy facilities, with convenient access to nanofabrication and
characterization tools on campus. Dr Gordon's group collaborates
extensively with
professors in Chemistry, Physics (SFU and UBC), and Mechanical
Engineering, as well as collaborators in other parts of Canada
(see for example the Biopsys Network
), the US (Lawrence Berkeley Labs) and Spain (ICFO). Our group is
well-recognized internationally for
contributions
plasmonics; see for example, our invited publications
or

The
University
of Victoria is among the strongest universities in Canada: it
consistently places either 1 or 2 in the annual Macleans rankings for
comprehensive universities. Recently, it placed at 130 in the world on
the Times Higher Education Supplement.
Victoria is the capital of British Columbia, located on the beautiful
Vancouver Island, and it has the mildest winter in Canada and with less
than half the annual rainfall of nearby Vancouver. (Quoted from Wikipedia:
"Total annual precipitation is just 608 mm (23.9 in) at the Gonzales
weather station in Victoria, contrasted to nearby Seattle, (137 km/85 mi
away to the southeast), with 970 mm (38.2 in) of rainfall, or Vancouver,
100 km (62 mi) away, with 1,219 mm (48 in) of rainfall... The rain shadow
effect also means that Victoria gets more sunshine than surrounding areas.
With 2,223 hours of sun annually, Victoria is one of the sunniest places
in British Columbia, and gets more sunshine than most other cities in
Canada except those in the southern Prairies.")
Presently we have no funded student/postdoc positions available. Students with their own funding will receive generous top-up funding, when allowed by their other funding sources. Contact Dr. Gordon for more information or apply directly to Graduate Admissions at the University of Victoria. To ensure that I see your application, please list Dr. Gordon as your proposed supervisor.
