Welcome to the world of Virtual 3D Audio, an exciting field currently undergoing significant research and exploration by a wide range of enthusiasts. From small time musicians, to audiologists, to cinematic and gaming industries, there is widespread interest in the many applications of 3D sound production.
The 3D Stereo Navigation team is comprised of four enthusiastic UVic Electrical Engineering students looking to explore the challenges of digitally synthesizing the experience of 3D sound through binaural synthesis. The larger goal of this project is to find useful applications, particularly in the biomedical field, that take advantage of 3D audio. One area of particular importance and great challenge will be to explore calibration methodologies that can tailor the experience to the individual user. Since no two people perceive 3D sound images the same, the “real”ness of the experience will heavily depend on creating a sound environment matched to the anatomically unique listener.
